sure i did, the same way as i read that this game will remain free when i registered ... unfortunately, my virtonomics experience has made me very suspicious of russian business style and i do not understand why a free website service would need my phone number. If it has no use for them, there is no use to ask for it.

I'm sure dodgy sites also state a confidentiality policy, so I leave all sites that request unnecessary info well alone.
 
Most sites/forums use a distorted picture with a semi-hidden code to prevent auto registrations. Phone numbers are unnecessary imho.
