So which country/region do you prefer to build/buy factories in and why ?
 
I'm going to start to shift factories where salaries are a small percentage of cost to russia/far-east for the low taxes (18%).
 
what is your strategy ? do you look for low salary or low taxes?

For things sold in Japan. Japan customs is expensive (about half made in Japan)
 
For everything else what ever makes me money lol. Mostly China I think tho because that is reality...

i try to produce retail items in the country that products will be consumed, most of the times. reasons:
1. that deadly 25% or 30% import duties. those are the biggest money-sinkers in the game.
2. Paid custom duties are simply removed from the game, while taxes are still in the game to help city economics.
3. Produce and sell locally is the key to this game (i'll censor the details). but of course not on mary/lien where more than half of the markets are wide galaxy open. join Russian realms to feel the chill.
 
disclaimer: some experts may disagree with me. these are just personal views based on limited experience and study.

actually i heard exactly the same from "an expert" so you probably have not so limited experience ;)
 
i know my way is not the most optimized way (tax wise)  but centralizing your whole distribution to just one warehouse and distribute from there is much more time efficient for me. it is also more flexible to deal with market saturation.

Check out Estonia on lien.  I'm governor and I'm bashing down the tax rate and sponsoring government subsidy programs.  Education is high and rocketing up and salaries are not bad.  Rent and eletricity are also being pushed down.  I can't control customs as Wonson says, so you should probably research that.

my advice is not to build to much in small cities where salary is at first low. with no unemployment salaries will rise fast. i made this mistake with Gao on Mary. better to build in bigger cities where the salary can't be shifted that fast. in my opinion for factories is a unemployement between 5- 15% healthy. to much would indicate a drop in edcuation.

good observation Wolf.
though sharp rise of salaries in Gao was not a normal one. That situation has been created by players intentions.
 
furthermore, i don't think it's disadvantageous to businessmen of the area. take a look at average prices of Business clothes, outerwear, brilliants, beer... hard to locate such good markets in Europe.

I have most of my factories in countries I have my shops. I did that for a few reasons:
- to cut out import/export costs
- lower transport costs
- Practical advantages of having one main office for shops, factories and marketing
- to have less employee load on main office.
 
Mainly the last part is a big deal for me, since my management Q is rather low (23) a few thousand employees gives quite a load. Too high Q employees in main office and too many of them drops my efficiency.
