I was recently playing a game similar to this one. They regularly inform their players about what they're working on. They even hold polls to help prioritise things.
So, for example:
"over the course of next month, we'll be fixing these bugs: A, B, C, ...
We will also implement 1 of these 3 suggestions you've made: X, Y, Z. We invite you to vote on your favorite option."
I'm quite sure this will make players feel more involved. It will also give them the impression things are progressing. I would be verrry surprised indeed if the result weren't more spending by these players... More spending = more resources for the game's developpers = more progression = more spending = ...
