In general do they have to relate? Is there a certain number max that is a rule of thumb?  Like I wanted to have a store with Food & Household goods, is that a good combo?

It doesn't matter whether we think there is any logical connection between the products sold. Extra departments negatively impact your service level and your sales quantities, no matter which department you mix.
 

Players with high commercial qualifications can compensate this (partly) with more and better trained staff. I would definitely recommend starters to stick to single department stores.

I would definitely recommend starters to stick to single department stores.

Excellent recommendation.
 
Even when your commerce and marketing skill levels are high, it is often beneficial to use a single department in the store. Remember to do your market research for the location where you want to sell product.

I once read (official admin text, I think) that certain combinations of products / departments give you a sales bonus.
Also, I think the global best stores ranking has some conditions (for earning points) requiring to sell several products.
 
OK, I may remember incorrectly though. Possibly products of the same department give you a sales bonus. Not sure.
