The (extremely brief) instructions for the Markets Storm contest are as follows...

Each participant gets one point for leadership in product sale in items. The maximum is one point for each product in each city. Leadership is among all players, not only among the contest participants.

So, I'm selling the most meat in Lanzhou. But I haven't earned any VIRTS. Why is this?

you must be confusing game points (which are bought for money), VIRTs, and points that you get for good results in contests, these points have been credited to your ranking (240 precisely, 22 points - today)

Here is the easiest way of explaining it:

For Market Storm, each time you are #1 for a product in a city, you earn 1 point per turn.

So if you were #1 in 5 cities for a product, you would earn 5 points per turn.

At the end of the contest, the person with the most points wins. VIRTs and points (outside of contests) are different things.
