not sure if it is going to be worth it, but is anybody interested in sharing the workload for the following? Researching which types of factories offer the highest profit per worker.
 
For example: a 15000 worker steel factory might bring a potential of 20M in weekly profits, but if a 5000 worker shoe factory results in a 10M weekly profit, that would be a more efficient way of using your limited production qualification, wouldn't it?
 
PM me if you're interested. The goal is to share the information amongst the participants. Unless somebody already has good results and wants to post them here Well

The profitability depends on many factors, not just on type of the subdivision.
 
Quality of raw materials and technology level can easily shifts the profitability from the initial level of 10k to 100k per worker and backwards.
 
Based on my own experience the most profitable business I ever run was producing of HQ machines. Net profit per worker was around 150k daily.
 
(That's 750m daily for a 5'000 workplaces factory or over 2b for a 15'000 workplaces factory)

As for the topic: yes, you are right: the swings in materials' prices will shift this. To make the research valuable, it would have to be conducted say on a weekly basis. Which is verrry much work indeed. That might result in some chronically ill industries though as well as some golden industries.

gross profit is more tractable, you could have a matrix of input and output prices for each material, which combined with the conversion matrix per worker available from the factory definition would give you a simple calculation.  The problem lies in the assumptions around the raw material prices.
