Wonder whether anyone could shed some light on a question I have.
 
Why on earth are we supposed to participate in auctions paying billions when the assets of whatever is being on auction is worth so much less??  Am I missing out something??

As for why the assets are valued less (game valuation) than what people will bid for them, only point purchased divisions can be auctioned and they are worth whatever anyone is willing to pay for it.
For example, a barn(villa) costs 1 game point to build and the game values it at ~1B, put it on auction and people will often pay ~50B, because that's what the bidder values the game point at.

The amount listed for the asset value is a fixed amount that is usually much less than it is worth. For example, bauxite is worth around $30,000 on lien realm but the system may value it at closer to $200 per unit. Your assets on your balance sheet will decrease if you buy a mine but if you paid a fair price you'll make more money than you paid for it once you've finished mining all of it.
