In Flames We Trust – Corp Thread (Lien)

Welcome to the In Flames We Trust corporation thread! In this thread the corp will be discussing all sorts of things.

If you’re not part of the corp, don’t worry! You can read the thread or post in the thread as well.

In Flames We Trust will try to hold most discussions here. For any discussions that need to be super top secret (maybe when we’re trying to win a tender), we’ll retreat to PMs. But we’ll be discussing things out here that would usually be kept behind closed doors.

Kindergarten specialization (which requires Q3 grapes to produce baby food) was less profitable than Prepare for School and Children's Art Studio in one city where I tested it. Of the three, Children's Art Studio was the most profitable although profits are quite low compared to IT centers, restaurants, and auto repair shops.

It's interesting that additional advertising and increasing the service level didn't make any difference in sales for my IT centers:

Seoul (1 equip, Q1.02 workers):
Popularity 194.66
Number of subscribers 2 281 (max.: 35 000)
Paid minutes 22 803 (1 603.34 MB per turn)
Service level Low
Price (at the moment of update) $1 000.00 per minute ($22 803 000.00)

Seoul (1 equip, Q10.98 workers):
Popularity 267.00
Number of subscribers 2 282 (max.: 35 000)
Paid minutes 22 811 (1 603.90 MB per turn)
Service level Normal
Price (at the moment of update) $1 000.00 per minute ($22 811 000.00)

Since service level didn't appear to make any difference, I lowered worker qualification to overload top3 but this time sales tanked as the service level dropped from normal to very low

Tokio (130 wkr/ 23 equip)
Number of subscribers 14 258 (max.: 805 000)
Paid minutes 142 580 (10 025.16 MB per turn)
Service level Normal
Price (at the moment of update) $3 000.00 per minute ($427 740 000.00)

Tokio (240 wkr/ 24 equip)
Number of subscribers 770 (max.: 840 000)
Paid minutes 7 697 (541.20 MB per turn)
Service level Very low
Price (at the moment of update) $3 000.00 per minute ($23 091 000.00)

It looks like the way to expand IT revenue is to grow Qualification, so you increase Top3.

I will be adding Tower capacity in New York, Seoul, and Tokyo pretty much every day for people looking for bandwidth. I also have extra bandwidth in Fukuoka, but that is a smaller market.

I you need something, ask in the AM before I have disposed my IT and Tower Equipment.

To make a table you just use HTML except with [tag] instead of <tag>. One easy way is to go to http://www.textfixer.com/html/csv-convert-table.php ... which creates an html table from your list then copy it to Notepad or other word processor and use Replace function to change [ to < and ] to >. I also edited the table tag to add a border to make it easier to read.

Did you try different speed?

Updated: Higher speeds increase service level which may result in more bandwidth sold. Each subscriber will still only buy 10 minutes each and the bandwidth used will be the same (about 14 minutes per MB) but you may get more subscribers. The effect is greater when service level was lower.

Sometimes, increasing your speed might not make any difference. I noticed no difference when:
1. Service level was normal
2. Service level was low AND competitors didn't sell much bandwidth at higher service levels
3. IT equipment or worker qualification was below average (which kept service level very low despite higher speed)

Determining how much you should sell data for at IT centers is very easy because every city follows the same pattern where revenue remains the same at varying price points and drops off if the price is above a certain amount. For example, prices in a large city with moderate wealth were:

Price/MinuteMinutes SoldRevenue (10 workers/1 equip)
100228,27522,827,500
1,00022,81122,811,000
2,00011,42422,848,000
2,4006,73916,173,600
3,0005,16215,486,000
5,0002,05110,255,000

Here are the results I got in another region with higher wealth but a lower population:

Price/MinuteMinutes SoldRevenue (10 workers/1 equip)
10,0001,54015,400,000
20,00076815,360,000
20,00076815,360,000
30,00051315,390,000
40,00038515,400,000
60,00025615,360,000
65,00023615,340,000
70,00020314,210,000
80,00017213,760,000
90,00014913,410,000
100,00012812,800,000

As you can see, the pattern is exactly the same which makes it very easy to set prices.

If charging anywhere between $10K/minute and $65K/minute results in the same revenue then you obviously want to charge at least $65K/minute since lower expenses (due to needing to purchase less data) will obviously result in higher profits.

Currently, companies on Lien are selling data from their towers at extremely low prices ($300/MB which is about $20/minute) so you can easily set the price at the point just before revenue starts to drop which would be $2,000/minute in the first example and $65,000/minute in the second example. If the cost of data were much higher, then you could just subtract expenses from revenue to get profits and sell at whichever price resulted in the highest profit.

Of the 22 cities I checked, the most profitable price point was between $1,100/minute - $65,000/minute. For most of those cities, the ideal price was between $1,100/minute - $5,000/minute. I only tested larger and wealthier cities so prices may be lower in some of the poorer cities.

I got a request not to reduce salaries in Fukuoka. The question is what this has on the retail market. The other issue raised was that expanding the city is a waste of money.

My previous experience in Fukuoka, before I messed up and satisfied so many voters that nobody turned out for the election, was that reducing salary had no effect on the retail markets. I concede that the other project -- raising the salaries -- boosts your popularity and allows you to, possibly, boost an additional retail market.

Any other mayors have opinions on the salary question?

I am pretty sure that I have noticed an increase or decrease in the Auto Repair or Restaurant sales after the population increased or decreased. A 3% boost in total restaurant and auto repair sales would be worth the cost of the project, in my opinion.

Any other mayors have opinions on this question?

In any case, having already promised to lower salaries, I feel obligated to follow through. Otherwise, I would look like a real politician instead of a Virto-politician. I will collect data on all the retail markets before and after the changes, assuming I get elected. If my data show a decrease in retail sales, I will increase salaries in subsequent game years.

I used to decrease salaries to help factories and other player businesses.  My thinking was that I'd attract player businesses and that tax revenue on player production was better than any retail tax as far as supporting the city/region.  However, I don't think salary expense is a major expense concern in general.  raw material and taxes are better to worry about.  And increasing salary does help retail.  if everyone decreased salary, retail in total would shrink and we'd all loose money.  So, in summary, I think higher salary is the better choice at this point.

Regarding expanding city size, I think it might reduce the number of immigrant workers.  but the 3% change is so frigging small that it never really helps.  so, probably a waste of money for that angle.  but, it increases popularity and that is helpful.

Some Pollination Data: I forgot to pollinate soybeans, so I got some figures as I was expanding the Apiary.

A T12 Apiary with 25 x Q25 Bees pollinated 9% bonus out of a maximum of 20% for a 1000 ha farm. This suggests that these bees pollinate 9/20 * 1000 /25 = 18 ha per bee.

Edit:
Increase in output from the Apiary did not change the Pollination bonus. I must be getting bonus from other corporate apiaries.

Here are the stats on Fukuoka after 1 round of expanding education, expanding the city border and decreasing salary. I was able to support 2 retail sectors.

Year  Education  Wealth  Salary    Population
51        6.08       19.80   216.75     1384
52        6.38       19.98   205.92     1425

I will report on retail trade after the update tomorrow.

I tracked 2 items from each retail group ever since I became mayor of Fukuoka. Volume increased for those groups where I supported the retail market (Auto and Manufactured Goods). The increases that I tracked were Electric Cars (842 -> 867), Car Alarms (48,852 -> 50,318), Kettle Grills (62,900 -> 64,578) and Park Benches (39,423 -> 40,200). The volume for electric cars and car alarms remained increased through the end of the fiscal year, but they did not increase after the population change which was disappointing. The volume of Park Benches slowly decreased every turn and this trend continued after the population increase. The Kettle Grills decreased for 5 turns to a value of 64,037 and remained constant for 12 turns, but then decreased each turn. The decrease continued after the increase in population to a current value of 63,633.

The support of Autos did reverse the downward trend in price for electric cars and I have been able to increase my selling price.

For this fiscal year, I will try to increase education, increase salaries and increase population and see if I get better results.

Personal Goal for In Flames Corp: Giving more than I receive. How can I help?
Favorite Virtonomic Industry: The one I haven't tried yet Well
Favorite thing to do in-game: Experimentation seems to be the norm for me.
Is what is your personal goal: My next goal is to understand and hopefully master the tender system
Are you interested in learning technical tender knowledge: Yes, sir!
Are you willing to share resources within the corp: Yes

Something interesting about me: After 7 years of "lurking" this is my first post ever in virto.

When I first started playing I had a huge excell spreadsheet, that linked all of the factories, and I maximized my profit per worker, because imho workers were the most limiting factor for a newb.

As a result (of not adapting to the markets) I now have about 55,000 employees that are STILL making sports tools, even though the price I can get has dropped from $1200 to $99 over time. (I suspect I am ready for a major overhaul.)
